No, there are _definitely_ better/easier ways to move a TL tree (and if there isn't, then I agree that there should be). But there is lots of other software out there that won't like $HOME changing, so this was just a more general suggestion to side step the issue entirely. I've done this myself on university computer systems so that I can fake-install software to /usr/ as an unprivileged user, since I personally found adding a single line to my "~/.profile" to be easier than trying to configure a bunch of random software to be okay using a different prefix.
