There are several remaining TeX Live installs on that High Sierra =
machine, all with darwinlegacy binaries. Probably from testing =
install-tl during pretest those years.

Looking closer:

- 2025: luajithbtex exhibits the very same problem

- 2022: it doesn't

No install in between these two years. So whatever changed and is =
causing this happened between 2022 and 2025.
