I didn't look into svn, but I did look at https://www.tug.org/docs/metapost/mplibapi.pdf
There is a statement in section 7.4:

> For instance, you cannot split a single statement over multiple chunks.

That's why I believed a statement broken into several lines won't work in Hans' solution.
