[Feature request] Enable spaces in filenames

Dear list,

Without having looked at the archive, I'm quite sure this has been asked
before. ;o)

While playing with 'mptopdf', I've noticed that 'mpost' (TeX Live 2019
on Kubuntu Linux) chokes on the command line

   $ mpost "h e l l o.mp"

and requests to find the input file 'h'.

At least in TeX Live, TeX itself copes with spaces in input filenames
when quoted as in

   $ pdftex "h e l l o.tex"

Could it be arranged that MetaPost would deal with quoted whitespace in
filenames?
