It is similar, because it IS the new font selection scheme - hint, the initials are nfss

I found the solution using the package plnfss - it's probably very similar
to the LaTeX font selection scheme.

I created a file jluag.tex %ag is for AvantGarde

\input plnfss
\input ot1cm.pfd % plain font description file for CM fonts
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
\selectfont % activate the font with requested attributes
\usefont{OT1}{pag}{m}{n} % switch to AvantGarde; the fd file ot1utl.fd will

For other fonts, search for files like "ot*.fd"

The syntax seems to be

LaTeX2e font selection
"\usefont {encoding} {family} {series} {shape} "
http://tex.loria.fr/general/new/fntguide.html

The {series} {shape} parameters required some experimentation for me, but
probably obvious LaTeX font gurus.
