You'll need to be a bit more specific about your problem. In what way were you unable to open DVI files directly? Do the DVI files have the correct icon (it should be a piece of paper with DVI written on it with a blue underlining). If you double-click the files, do you get an error message or just a Windows "Open with" dialog? Are you able to start Yap manually (it's the item "Previewer" in the MiKTeX group). If you are able to start Yap, can you open DVI files using File, Open from the menus?
