TDS compliant root directory

I am a longtime user of WinEdt/MikTex and have just switched
to WinEdt 6.0/MikTex 2.8.  Normally I include latex style files
and other files which are needed regularly as inputs
to many documents in a folder which I create to collect them.
In the past I have told WinEdt/MikTex how to find these
items via MikTex options mo.exe, setting the root path to
the folder in question by "adding it" in the "Roots"
dialogue box.  When I try to do this now I am told

"Not a TDS-compliant root directory."

The WinEdt folks say this is a MikTex problem.
I am sure it is a standard one, and apologize for
raising it online, but I can't seem to find anything recent
which seems to address this issue.

How do I create the directory which WinEdt searches when
it encounters inputs while processing a .tex file?
