I tried it too and it works fine (YAP uses the auto render mode).
Sometimes the first page is wrong but after a page switch it adjusts
itself.

You can install it parallel to 2.8. and switch between both versions
by changing the PATH-variable. 


Regarding installation problems: I don't have the impression that
there are more problems with 2.9 than with previous versions.  
Also don't forget: in such lists people post if they have problems.
Normally you don't hear from all the cases where it worked fine.
