Hi i am Mary I just have install Miktex yesterday and i am using the latex manual for beginners but believe me it is very hard to give the math commands.They dont work. Working from ascii2006.pdf document, i obtained the necessary files and copied them to the relevant directories of my latex installation. (Incidentally, i couldn't find a copy of ASCII.afm.) The directories specified (for a Unix installation of Tex) do not correspond precisely to the ones in my MikTex distribution, but i put the files where i they seemed to have to go. However, when i compile the simplest of documents using the ascii package, i get the following message: Trying to make PK font ASCII at 600 DPI... : blah, blah : PK font ASCII could not be created. I subscribe to the RTFM principle, but i'm afraid i've been unable to locate TFM to solve this problem despite scouring the internet and the few Latex books at my disposal. Could someone please point me in the right direction - i'm spending hours on something i'm sure could be resolved in 5 minutes if i just knew how. You haven't activated the map-file correctly. If you have changed config.ps and pdftex.map as described in ascii2006: undo the changes. Then follow the instructions in the miktex documentation: http://docs.miktex.org/2.9/manual/advanced.html#psfonts If you want have a multiuser installation and want to install the font for all users call initexmf with the --admin switch. While the automatic download/install is enabled I just get some delays during compile. Should be vanish some times.
