I'm not sure what you do not like.
I'm guessing you do not like the spacing in VM
and the location of the subscript D.
The first of these has a natural fix:
$\sigma^{2}_{\mathit{VM}}$
The second is debatable as to which is better.
But you could try a strut:
$\varepsilon_{\rule{0pt}{0.75em}D}$
Btw, such questions really belong on comp.text.tex.
You might get a better answer there.
