problem with new installation

I have just replaced my TeX installation (looking forward to beamer).

I installed ProTeXt 3.0, then MikTeX2.9, and then TeXMakerX as instructed
by "The Quickest Way to a TeX System". All seemed to go well until I used
the MikTex Package Manager (Wizard) to first update a couple of packages
and then to install a few more new packages. After that, I can still 
install
new packages but cannot update any ones already nstalled. The error
message from the package manager is: "The update wizard could not be
found."

Any suggestions will be gratefully appreciated. Thanks!

PS. Is there a way to search the MikTex archives globally rather than a 
month
at a time?
