Help with installation

I've just installed MikTex 2.9 on my new computer. I used to run 2.8
routinely with no problems. But now I have problems.

I'm working with a very simple file, which used to compile fine under
2.9 When I first load the file, I get a .pdf window as usual. I make a
change, and recompile. I got a message that i was missing a certain
package. (But I can't tell you what that package was--you'll see why in
a minute.) So I asked TexWorks to download that package. Good. It did
that.

I compiled again, and I get a message:

texify.exe: Permission denied: similarity for kids.log (THe name of my
file is 'similarity for kids')
texify.exe: Data: similarity for kids.log.

What is going on? I am a relatively naive user, so if you can explain
this--or what to do--please be patient and use very simple terms.

Thank you!

Mark Saul
