Re: Migration to new machine

When I get a new machine:

1) I copy my localtree from one machine to another. I call it localtree in both, and put it in the same place.
2) I re-install MikTeX since that forces an upgrade. Last time I did the full install, which took a long time. This time, I will do the "just-in-time" approach.

You can find the list of currently installed packages in
miktex\config\packages.ini. You will have to edit (a copy of) this
file to get a simple line-by-line list. 

But the main problem with such a list approach is that mpm will stop
if it encounters the name of a package it doesn't know or which is
already installed. So it could be that you will have to edit the
list and restart more than once. 

If you have the means to give your new machine access to the Install
tree (and the "UserInstall" tree if you have one) of your old miktex
(e.g. throught a copy on an external hard disk or an suitable usb
stick) I would at first try the following: 

On your new machine run

mpm --repository=path/to/root/of/old/tree1 --import-all
mpm --repository=path/to/root/of/old/tree2 --import-all

Then run the update manager.

Packages can normally be used with all (active) miktex versions.
Only some packages with binaries are version dependent.
