Re: downloading the MiKTeX package "symbol"

Dear Ulrike and other MiKTeX users,

Thank you for your prompt reply. I downloaded the files you indicated, and had no problem unpacking "symbol.cab". But my WinZip 12.0 program can't unpack the LZMA files, even though it's supposed to be able to handle them. For some reason, the actual files have extensions "tar.tar" instead of "tar.lzma". When I tried to open them with WinZip, a dialog window popped up with the error message

Error reading header after processing 0 entries.

I don't think that the files were corrupted during downloading, because I downloaded them several times with the same result. I also tried changing the extension to that shown in the CTAN directory (.tar.lzma), but then WinZip tries to add this to an archive instead of opening it.

Sorry to present you with another problem. Any advice would be much appreciated.

You need from CTAN the miktex package(s) you want to install (e.g.

 systems/win32/miktex/tm/packages/symbol.cab

and the two miktex databases:

 systems/win32/miktex/tm/packages/miktex-zzdb1-2.9.tar.lzma
 systems/win32/miktex/tm/packages/miktex-zzdb2-2.9.tar.lzma

Put the everything in an empty folder (outside from miktex) and then use this folder as "local repository" in the package manager.
