citation on the line

Hi, I would like to cite a reference in-line in the text of a manuscript (i.e. I would like to refer to a reference in the text as follows, "Figure 5 is adapted from reference 5." using LaTeX. Right now the reference number is being cited using the \cite command which causes the reference number to appear in superscript. Is there a way to do this on the line?
