Miktex query - repeated crashing

Hi all,

I am a very new user of LaTex - everything was running smoothly until I returned from the Christmas break. Now, every time I run TeXworks/Miktex and open a .tex file, the Typeset also opens automatically and the program crashes. I have uninstalled and re-downloaded the software and the problem is continuing. As a new user, my troubleshooting capabilities are rather limited - any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I downloaded the software from miktex.org, version 2.9.4521 for Windows 32-bit.
