Not surprised to hear that. LaTeX is a great tool, but there is a learning curve. Good luck with it. This is a board more for MiKTeX. What would other users suggest as a better general help board for our newbie friend?

Ok. The simplest way to go is to use a LaTeX dedicated editor. For instance, you might install TeXmaker, or TeXstudio (free). Open your file in the editor, and in the 'tools' menu, click on pdflatex (F6 for texmaker). This will launch the pdflatex compiler on your file. You'll the compile log in the bottom window. If your file has no errors, the compilation will end in a pdf file, which you can read with the integrated viewer.
