"Host not found" update error

Hello,

I did a brief search of the mailing list and didn't find a post same as 
my problem.  I've been updating miktex for several years via automatic 
update.  But for the past couple of days, whether choosing the last-used 
repository site or trying to "choose a remote package repository" 
option, I get the
"Host not found
  Details: get host by name failed in tcp_connect()"
error.  Package Manager shows the last updated package as 
miktex-runtime-bin-2.9 installed on Feb. 7, 2013.  MikTex 2.9 is 
installed on an XP MCE machine.

Any insight into what's causing the sudden problem?  Could it be a 
faulty installation of the last updated package?  Where can I find the 
relevant log files?
