OK this is a good lead -- I am starting TeXworks by clicking on the
TeXworks icon on the Windows 8 start screen. I also have a custom start
menu addon. The same bizarre behavior occurs whether I start TeXworks from
the standard Windows 8 start screen or from the custom start menu.
