I had rather concluded that was a likely explanation, that the author/maintainer
had botched a name change. Curious that the situation also seems to break the
package list tab of the Settings app. The situation has been around since at
least version 2.8.3761. I've tried it both with that version and 2.9.4813. Same
problem in both.

Comes back to my question in my original post. What's the fix? How can things be
set right? For me there are two likely options if no fix is forthcoming to deal
with software with such an apparently long lived quirk/misbehaviour. I have no
attachment to the "latest and greatest is the must have" mantra that's so
popular these days, so point me to an older, better behaved version of Miktex.
OR... I could simply dump it from my system altogether as no longer maintained
well enough to be worthy of consideration.

Timeline a fix, please. I really have no desire to dump the program but I have
not patience with tools, software or otherwise, that don't function properly.
They get replaced or I do without.

Regards...
