Thanks for all the various advice. Obviously I am new to this forum.

Code:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\begin{document}
\begin{figure}
\begin{center}
%\resizebox{3in}{!}{\includegraphics{Chp02Fig01.eps}}
\includegraphics{example-image-A}
\end{center}
\caption{Schematic illustration of the
action of a tensor on a vector.
The tensor acts on the vector $\mathbf{u}$
and outputs the vector $\mathbf{v}$. This is some more text.}
\end{figure}
\end{document}

This produces dvi file fine, but when I convert dvi to pdf (using WinEdit),
the caption over prints the figure.This was not a problem until I installed
MikTex (latest version) on a new computer (using Windows 7). If I change
figure to pdf and use pdflatex problem does not occur. But this is not a
good solution for me as I have many figures in eps (for a book).

Should be able to download figure from
