Problem with beamer

I was told that processing a file with pdflatex gives the same result as
processing it with latex, with \pdfoutput1 in the preamble. They both
load with "pdftex". The following file:
\documentclass{beamer}
\pdfoutput1
\title{testfile}
\author{Michael Barr}
\begin{document}
\titlepage
\end{document}
gives quite a different result when processed with latex and pdflatex.
The latter gives the expected out, while the former produces a white page
with a large black square in the upper left quadrant. When \pdfoutput is
changed to 0, they give the same dvi file. This is Miktex 2.8, by the
way.
I am asking this more out of interest, since I can always process it using
pdflatex, but I like to track these things down when I can.
