This is not a MiKTeX question and there are lists for TeX/LaTeX
questions.

Your problems are in the following two lines, \math should be \mathbb.

$\math {R}$ & real numbers & \\

$\math {Q}$ & irrational numbers & \\

Subject: [MiKTeX] strugglign to embed math symbols in a table

Hello,

I am trying to create a table of math symbols and their meanings to
serve as a cheatsheet as I go through a couple of advanced math courses.

I have only been looking at LaTeX since about a week ago, and I am
confused.

My basic document looks like:

% symbols.tex

\documentclass{article}

  \usepackage{amsmath,amssymb}

\begin{document}

\title{Mathematical Symbols \\

used in Discrete Mathematics}

\maketitle

\begin{tabular}{p{3cm}|c|p{3cm}}

\hline

Symbol & Name & Example \\

\hline

$\mathbb {U}$ & universal set & all elements under consideration \\

$\{\}$ & empty set & contains no elements \\

$\mathbb {N}$ & natural numbers & $\{1,2,3,4,...\}$ \\

$\mathbb {Z}$ & integers & $\{-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,...\}$ \\

$\math {R}$ & real numbers & \\

$\math {Q}$ & irrational numbers & \\

\end{tabular}

\end{document}

And the log of the pdflatex run is:

This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.5-1.40.14 (MiKTeX 2.9 64-bit)
(preloaded format=pdflatex 2014.2.9)  10 FEB 2014 15:54

I feel like I am doing something fundamentally wrong with encoding my
math symbols, but I can't determine what it is. I have been looking at
the LaTeX wikibook as a source for how to create LaTeX documents, so any
help would be greatly appreciated.
