rebuild formats | miktex config utility failed?

Running 2.9 under Windows 7. 64-bit, installed for user only (me, who is 
also sysadmin for this computer). Applied some recent updates, and ran 
through my usual sequence of 'Refresh FNDB' and 'Update Formats'. First 
step ran fine, but now, when I try to update formats, I get an error 
message: windows pops up saying

'The MikTeX configuration utility failed. Do you want to see the 
transcript?'

if I click 'yes', then I'm presented with the following:

initexmf.EXE: The operation failed for some reason.
initexmf.EXE: Data: 
C:\Users\egc\Desktop\egc\text\MikTeX\miktex\bin\x64\miktex-makefmt.exe

Any suggestions? Known issues? I'm asking because the involved machine 
is one out of 5 different machines I run MikTeX from, and before I 
'update' them, want to get some sense of whether or not this is an 
'issue', or a 'one-off' on this particular machine.
