Dear Christine,

I can only suggest you to return to your previous system if you are lucky to have a backup.

As an option, you might have two installations: old and new system, 
and switch between them if your disk space is large enough.

From my point of view, one should NOT upgrade any software unless one knows
exactly why is it necessary and what are the advantages.
