Broken MiKTeX installation

Hello,

I had a fully functional MiKTeX 2.9 installation working on my laptop
running Windows 7 when I accidentally deleted the
C:/Users/.../AppData/Local/MiKTeX folder. This made the MiKTeX uninstaller
unable to succesfully remove files, registry entries, etc. I tried to
reinstall MiKTeX on top of the broken installation to try to repair it but
it didn't work as expected. After uninstalling and reinstalling a couple of
times I got stuck with the following problems:
- Installer and uninstaller seem to run fine without problems.
- When I try to compile a file using pdflatex run from Texmaker the
following fatal error occours:  "!pdfTeX error: pdflatex (file lmsy9): Font
lmsy9 at 600 not found"
- I cannot run the update wizard from the package manager.
- When I run the update wizard from the start menu it marks *all* the
packages as obsolete and deletes all of them (it even deletes itself so I
cannot run the update wizard twice).
I also tried to use the portable version in the hope that it won't fetch
any data from the system it is running on, but here pdflatex freezes, and
when closed using windows task administrator the same error is appears at
the end of the log texmaker displays.

Any help would be much appreciated. In particular I would like to try to
manually remove any traces from the old MiKTeX installation and try a clean
install, if that is possible.
