Update problem: MiKTeX package management utility could not be found

Hi all,

today I tried to update MiKTeX to the latest version by

1. synchronizing my local copy of the MiKTeX repository with that one at 
ftp.dante.de and

2. doing the update from that local copy.

My installation is a single user x64-installation on Win 7 (latest patch 
level)

The update approach ended in an error message:
The MiKTeX package management utility could not be found.

How can I overcome that problem.
