problems running MikTex 2.9 on Windows 8.1

Hi All:

 

I've successfully installed (I think!) Miktex 2.9 on my Windows 8.1 machine.
However, when I try to compile a document (which compiles successfully on my
Windows 7 installation on another machine), I get:

 

Sorry, but "MiKTeX Configuration Utility" did not succeed.

 

The log file hopefully contains the information to get MiKTeX going again:

 

C:/Users/Vivian/AppData/Local/MiKTeX/2.9/miktex/log/initexmf.log

 

You may want to visit the MiKTeX project page (http://miktex.org), if you

need help.

Anyone have any ideas? Note that I previously updated the FNDB using Miktex
Settings (Admin).
