Re: Nothing will compile

Thank you for the reply and the useful link to the page on Stack 
Exchange.  I have updated MikTeX both with Admin and User versions (the 
updater found the recent changes that required two update runs, first to 
get one or two critical files then a second run for several more).  I 
have synchronized the packages from both, and rebuilt the filename 
database and formats from both (after enabling xetex and xelatex 
formats, which were excluded by default).  I now get the following 
errors, and TeXworks hangs on the "cannot read font names"spot.

Any further suggestions?
