No output with latest Miktex 2.9

Dear List members.
I  had to re-install Miktex 2.9, using Samsung r60 with Win 7.1.
I used the recommended Basic Miktex installer with the promise: " MiKTeX
has the ability to install needed packages automatically (on-the-fly),
i.e., this installer is suitable for computers connected to the Internet."
The latter is the case.

I installed also on a Sony Vaio (Win 7.1)  with the same result:
None of my previous Latex manuscripts produce any output any more.

I tested the following text:

Miktex does compile this text. But as soon as any one of the commented
lines is uncommented, the output is zero pages.

Any suggestions what can be done?
Since I have a number of rather involved texts in the pipeline, the present
state of affairs is extremely frustrating and deadlines are threatening.
