Rachel,
>From the log that you have provided, it seems that "\chapter" is the
first line of your .tex file. If so, then you need to (at least) define
the class file that LaTeX will use. You (probably) want to incorporate
other useful packages as well. The error messages from BibTeX are a
side effect of the fact that you have not successfully run the LaTeX
compile yet. (BibTeX uses a file created by the LaTeX compile.)
Search the web for help on "getting started" with LaTeX. One that I
have found helpful is Peter Grogono's "A LaTeX2E Gallimaufry:
Techniques, Tips, and Traps.", which can be found at
http://users.encs.concordia.ca/~grogono/Writings/writings.html . He
even provides the LaTeX source for the document, which can be quite
instructive.
