Oh dear ... Embarrassing.  I checked the tex document folder.  Somehow an old version of Beamer has indeed found its way into the same folder as the tex file was in.  Thank you Ulrike for spotting this.  Many of us users are just completely incompetent - our incompetence at least must amuse you when you encounter it!!

Thank you again Ulrike.  Than you also Paul for the quick fix which got me what I needed in the short term.
