I don't think that it is incompetence. I'm quite sure that you have
enough knowledge to check file pathes in a log-file. Or to search in
your system for a "beamer.cls" file. 

But you were quite in the grip of a prejudice. You were so sure that
your system is new and updated and the error must be the fault of
miktex that you didn't look in other places.
