How to support kerning?

Kerning and ligatures are supported by the Omega=20
'Level-1' font files.=20

A single 'level-1' OPL file can contain the=20
kerning and ligature information for a whole=20
unicode font. It's applied 'over the top' of the=20
'split up' font files that are generated to do the=20
actual rendering.=20

I made one for Unicode Chinese so that I didn't=20
get 'hanging' brackets and punctuation  which you=20
get with Chinese if you use 'level-0' fonts.

(Unfortunately, as I have said before in this=20
group, 'level-1' font support doesn't actually=20
work, because of bugs in the code. I fixed it up=20
and sent my fixes in, but they still don't seem to=20
have made it into the CVS or anyone's=20
distribution!)

I think, it is not very logical to break a large=20
unicode font to smaller
ones only for further junction to another large=20
font. Or at least
this job should be done fully automatically.=20
That's
why using .enc files doesn't seem to be a good=20
solution.

And again, there are two questions I've already=20
asked:
how can we preserve the kerning information and=20
which encodings
should we use for these *.enc files?
