With the default input (at least for LaTeX) now UTF-8, and the proliferation of fonts that people will be wanting to use, the likelihood of missing characters has grown significantly. However authors will need to know of this new setting, and select it when appropriate, according to their input and font choices. I don’t think that having this as default is desirable; but it’s certainly good to have it as a possible setting.
