Sorry, I just noticed that I apparently send all my replies just to
David and not to the list.

We found the problem. The output of pdflatex contained the character
0x9d, which was interpreted by the terminal as a control sequence.
Running pdflatex with the option

  --translate-file=3Dempty

solved the issue.
