It seems that texlinks looks into strange directories when it tries to create the symlinks (texconfig init): install_link failed for /usr/local/dtp/bin/teTeX-bin-2.0.1/etex. File already exists. install_link failed for /usr/local/dtp/bin/teTeX-bin-2.0.1/pdftex. File already exists. install_link failed for /usr/local/dtp/bin/tetex-bin-20030228/etex. File already exists. install_link failed for /usr/local/dtp/bin/tetex-bin-20030228/pdftex. File already exists. install_link failed for /usr/local/dtp/bin/teTeX-bin-20040208/etex. File already exists. install_link failed for /usr/local/dtp/bin/teTeX-bin-20040208/pdftex. File already exists. None of these directories is in the $PATH. That are my backups and they shouldn't be seen by texconfig at all. texlinks seems to look into bin/* rather than into bin/<platform>.
