Yes, and I'd have thought that putting a README into texmf-alt
that says at the top:

   README for the texmf-alt (`alternative') directory:
   
   This directory contains xdvi.cfg and *.map files for users of
   older versions of teTeX (< 1.0) or non-teTeX distributions.

would have made it fairly clear ;-)

I'm not quite sure how it should be changed ... here's what
README.t1fonts says about xdvi.cfg:

   To be able to support Type1 fonts, xdvi needs a xdvi.cfg file.  This
   file is already included in recent distributions of teTeX (starting
   from teTeX >= 1.0). The file texmf/xdvi.cfg is the same as the file in
   teTeX and included as a reference only;

Well, this refers to the `standalone' xdvik distribution - should
we change the wording for teTeX? What I wanted to say is that
users should more or less ignore the file in the source distribution.

                                           you won't need to install or
   copy the xdvi.cfg file if you're using one of these newer teTeX
   versions. You can also ignore the rest of the information in this
   README.t1fonts file, apart from the section `Debugging your font
   setup' at the end of the file which you may want to consult if
   something doesn't work as expected.

Acutally, the section `Debugging your font setup' could also
be changed to be more in sync with the actual configuration in
current teTeX ... maybe we should simply remove the entire
README.t1fonts (and pointers to it) from teTeX since it's too
confusing?
