2.96.3 beta -- `{' unmatched from configure on Irix

Building 2.96.3 beta on SGI Irix 6.5.22m (this worked for 2.96.1 
on Irix 6.5.21m)

line 73 of config.cache reads (after wrapping for mail):

bash also complains but keeps going:
