OK, done; I also tried to fix the description of the install
process in README.t1fonts (all in the CVS HEAD).

BTW, I've been wondering how end users of teTeX may find out
which version of teTeX they are running (if it has been installed
from sources by the sysadmin, with no rpm information or similar
available). Could it make sense to add the version number to
the subtitle (next to the date) in TETEXDOC{dvi,pdf,ps}?
