If you are really using a teTeX release with This is METAFONT, Version 2.7182 (Web2C 7.4.5) (note: uppercase C, version is 7.4.5 not 7.45), then this must be something like teTeX-2.0 (released in Feb. 2003). I can only suggest that you don't follow this route and switch to teTeX-3.0 (released in Feb. 2005) instead: http://tug.org/teTeX/ LaTeX (which is LaTeX2e of course) is included in teTeX-3.0, so no manual installation of LaTeX2e is needed.
