Personally, I just avoid making paper, if I can. I
use the web :-}

I am tending to go back to horrible old ways by converting
XML to LaTeX and running pdflatex. 

PassiveTeX is fine, if you work with its limitations;
unfortunately for many people there seems to be an
unbreakable bond between XML, Docbook and Norm Walsh's stylesheets.
And that is the setup that has problems.
