teTeX-2.0.2 is not that new at all. Yes, it is the latest release, but
if you consider doing a major upgrade that is ment to last for quite some
time (and 0.4 is *really* old), I recommend you to wait for teTeX-3.0. I
have started a new beta and I hope to bring out that 3.0 release a few
weeks after the next LaTeX release (which sounds like a delay of about
2 months).

I definately recommend against mixing the texmf trees. Some files have
slightly different directories and it will be unpredictable if you have
two different versions with the same name in tex/latex or fonts/tfm.

Bitmap fonts are no longer *that* important, since we have type1 fonts
for the most important fonts (cm+friends) and dvips and xdvi are set up
to use them by default (instead of going via metafont to bitmap fonts).
