Thomas, thanks for your reply. I was trying to compile everything from
source, because there seems to be no satisfactory binary package around
for Mac OS X.

It turned out that I was such an idiot. I downloaded
tetex-texmfsrc-2.0.2.tar.gz instead of texmf and untarred to
/usr/local/share. I now have the right file and everything seemed to be in
working order. I guess you can now add Mac OS X 10.3 to the platform
collection :)
