You are quite right, of course.  And that was exactly the problem.  My apologies
for taking liberties with your suggestion.  A little knowledge, as they say, is
a dangerous thing....

I did modify my PATH, but unfortunately I put the path _after_ /usr/bin, so it
was looking there first.  It sounds like this may have worked if I knew how to
properly uninstall the previous version.  But at least now I have things up and
running.
