That invocation is common enough (indeed, with command completion
almost unavoidable) that it would be a good idea if teTeX was able to
deal with it.  Something like

prefix="`sed 's/[\\/]\$//' <<EOF
${prefix}
EOF
`"

or so should do the trick in the configure script.
