outdated koma-script in Debian teTeX

Dear List,

I think that the koma-script package shipped with the Debian version of
teTeX is quite outdated. For instance, scrartcl.cls has this notice:

%% Copyright (C) 1994-2002 Markus Kohm and Frank Neukam.

whereas the one in CTAN reads:

%% Copyright (C) 1994-2004 Markus Kohm and Frank Neukam.

So I decided to upgrade this package, and used the install method
involving 'make' (as instructed in INSTALL.TXT of the package). I made a
copy of Makefile.unx, named it Makefile (as instructed), and left
everything at defaults, as these were fine for me; meaning, use my local
texmf tree (/usr/local/share/texmf). No errors were detected during make,
but when I did 'make install' the program detected koma-script's files in
my teTeX distribution and asked whether I wanted to overwrite them. I
aborted the execution, but I'd greatly appreciate suggestions as to how to
upgrade this package.

If the stock original tetex packages contain more recent versions of
koma-script, among others (caption is also outdated in the Debian
distribution), I'd like to install this version instead. The problem I'm
foreseeing though is that other packages I have installed depend on Debian
teTeX (AUCTeX for instance). Any suggestions as to how to proceed would be
most welcome.
