pdflatex on Solaris font problems with acroread

We've recently updated our teTeX installation to 3.0 under Solaris, and are having problems with PDF files generated with pdflatex (version 1.2.1a, included in the distribution) when viewing them using acroread. Acroread complains about the last font in the PDF file, irrespective of what that font is, with "Unable to extract the embedded font ....". I found a thread on NTG-pdftex from March suggesting that it's a known problem with acroread, but wondered if there was a solution or workaround - I haven't been able to find one so far.
