Can someone please post an explicit (i.e. really explicit, for a newbie) example of installing truetype .ttf fonts for use with pdflatex for the latest tetex distribution? I used to have it working fine on earlier distributions, but I cannot figure out the new file layout and all of the information for doing this on websites seems to be out-of-date now.

My general procedure is to use ttf2afm and afm2tfm to generate the files, then make a .fd file manually. At this point
I can run pdflatex on a document using the new fonts if the files are in the current working directory, but as soon as I move them to directories under /usr/local/share/texmf, there are not found any more (even though I have edited texmf.cnf).
I don't know how to use map files and I am not sure if updmap is needed.

Thanks,
Keith

PS: there is a typo "CONGIG" in texmf.cfg
