I really don't think that that is the problem.  I have tried things
in a new clean directory, with no improvement in the result.

I am about to try this suggestion.  I read the instructions on the
tug.org web page

  https://tug.org/texlive/quickinstall.html

and it looks like it *might* be within my capabilities.  Wish me luck.
